Friends for Life

Part of my friend group

Is a girlfriend group like Carrie, Miranda, Samantha, and Charlotte realistic?

With the fantastic four of Sex and the City, there is nothing that can break them up no matter how harsh the arguments are–Miranda literally caused Big to call off the wedding with Carrie and they still came back together. They also each have specific personalities, kind of in a cartoonish way. For example, Carrie is the friend who always has a boyfriend and boy problems, Charlotte is the conservative marriage type, Samantha is the sexual-liberated boss, and Miranda is the smart level-headed one. Their girl group is pretty black and white when it comes to the roles they play within it, but somehow it comes off authentic? I guess this is because of the way they approach each episodic situation. It allows them to have different reactions and solutions.

Honestly, their friend group seems extremely ideal, like what woman wouldn’t want to have platonic soulmates? Ones who will be there for you no matter what, for so long, and don’t get tired of your endless shenanigans. They also take crazy exotic trips together and all live quite financially comfortable lives. For a group of women who always have major issues in the dating category they have perfected the sisterhood category. I mean the show literally has a quote that states:

“Maybe our girlfriends are our soulmates, and guys are just people to have fun with.” – Carrie

Watching the show and comparing their friendship with my real-life girl group it is a bit jarring. Firstly, I couldn’t imagine everyone in my group being so starkly different as the SatC girl-group is; I usually befriend women who have similar interest and goals. The show also have these episodes where the girls have huge arguments and they exchange pretty hurtful words, but they resolve the problem by the end of the episode, like huh? I know it’s an episodic show, but in real-life friendships there would need to be more healing and communication. So, it may make women who view the show think they lack a good friendships because they don’t have a extremely tight girl group that help them with EVERY little detail of their life. I would advise those women that this is a fictional television show and not every friendship is going to be the same. We all can’t be rich, white, New York living women who have new men every week!
