Season 2, Episode 18.

Synopsis:This whole episode is surrounded by the question of “can you be friends with an ex?” Miranda see’s Steve, her ex, and just books it, while Carrie reaches out to her ex Big for a potential friendship. While Miranda ends up back in the bed with her ex, Carrie gets a rude awakening that her ex is actually engaged! and she freaks.
Discussion: Okay, so I totally related to the scene of Miranda running away when she saw her ex Steve walking in her direction on the street, because I am such an awkward person and that is just a recipe for cringy small talk. I did feel bad for Steve though be cause he seemed excited to have a conversation with her and I just adore Steve! Well obviously he felt some way about that so he went to her apartment to confront her about it, which is very bold of him. If I was Miranda I would be so annoyed by this, because obviously I didn’t want to confront you earlier and now you’re are at my home, no no! But I do have to say he was being really sweet even though what Miranda did was kind of shitty, so she invites him on a friendly dinner and when they get back to her apartment things get steamy and they sleep together. So in Miranda and Steve’s case, no ex’s can’t just be friends, but this is for the best for their relationship arc on the show.
Carrie on the other-hand wanted to show she wasn’t childish about the ex’s situation, so she decided to reach out to Big so they could have a friendly lunch. I was a little disappointed in her decision to do this because I know how toxic her and Big can be. They meet for lunch, and wow does Carrie look FABULOUS, which is how every girl wants their ex to see them, but after a few drinks and friendly laughs things turn not-so-fabulous. She makes a comment about Big and Natasha (his girlfriend) relationship not being serious yet and that prompts him to tell her that they’re actually engaged, WHAT!? That’s how both Carrie and I reacted because how are you going to marry a 25 year old women you barely know but gaslight and abandon Carrie after 2 years together?– Carrie’s question to Big.
Carrie and the girls come to the conclusion that Big decided to settle for the relationship that was easiest. I really felt for Carrie because I understand how she feels, I’ve had a few guys gaslight me about not wanting a relationship, but the next month they are in a relationship with someone else, and that SUCKS. So, the answer to her question about if ex’s can be friends is absolutely not, if we are weighing the outcomes of this episode, and I have to agree with that. Friends with ex’s are just complicated and not worth it in my opinion.
Overall rating: Given that this episode is top 2 on the top 10 most iconic episodes on screen rant I had high expectations, and I was not let down. I really enjoyed the episode for the drama is contained and the great hair and outfits Carrie had in it. My only critical note I have is Samantha’s and Charlotte’s story-lines were so boring and not meaningful, but Miranda and Carrie’s were really great that it made up for it completely. I’d give this episode a 8.8 of 10.
